Short: Data Acq. and Processing -- Graphic control
"The Web" -- Demonstration Edition
=================================
"The Web" is a an interactive, graphic-diagram based, environment designed
(at least initially) for Scientific Data Acquisition and Processing. This
Demonstration Edition has a restricted set of data-handling modules, and
cannot save things to disk, but is otherwise full-featured.
The concept underlying the system is of data packets travelling between
data handling `Elements'; these are connected by `Paths' along which the
packets travel -- being extended and modified as they go. Configurations
are built by placing and connecting the desired elements on screen using
the mouse. They can be modified at any time, even while data is flowing.
Full advantage is taken of multitasking, of course.
(With the full system) users can write their own modules and add them to
the environment; each module is defined by its own program. Many data
formats other than the one chosen for its current application are possible;
they are self-identifying, and so can be mixed in a single configuration.
The Web needs the 2.04 or later operating system. It should run in a
1MB machine (not tested!); it shows off its capabilities best on a 68030
system with floating point accelerator, but does not need either of these.
Likewise a hard disk is preferable but not necessary (the current system
fits easily on a floppy -- about 1/2 MB).
The demonstration package is self-contained. Unpack it into a convenient
directory or onto a floppy disk of its own. Demo.DOC has full instructions
on installation and operation.
